Robert Stewart Buchanan papers. 1825-1873 (bulk ca. 1845 - 1873).

Papers, 1825-1873 (bulk ca. 1845 - 1873). Most of the material concerns Buchanan's business affairs, but there are also some papers and personal correspondence relating to the Buchanan and Jephson families. Business records relate to his activities as New York agent for the Albion Life Insurance Company, of London, during the 1850s; his partnership with Richard Montgomery, inventor of corrugated iron beams, during 1850-1853, their pursuit of US and UK patents, and subsequent litigation; sales of gutta-percha belting, including correspondence with Charles Maggi, his agent in Pittsburgh (Pa.), 1859-1860; real estate, mainly in Manhattan and Brookyn; and other miscellaneous activities, including an interest in Niagara ferries and the Maid of the Mist. They include accounts, correspondence, deeds, leases, mortgages, stock certificates, legal documents, and other miscellaneous papers. Family papers include a printed flier, dated 1841, denouncing his brother James Buchanan as a wastrel, and a blackmailer's letter accusing his father, also named James Buchanan, of theft and fraud in Ireland. There is also some material relating to his father in law, William H. Jephson, including a certificate of membership in the New-York Society Library, the bill for his funeral, and correspondence with Elizabeth Curzon Buchanan, Jephson's daughter, about his estate. There is some other family correspondence with Elizabeth Buchanan, including a series of letter from England in the early 1870s discussing worries about her elderly aunt, Mary Augusta Farquhar. There are also some letters to Elizabeth Buchanan from women in Sing Sing prison, including a long letter from Adelaide Irving describing abuses on Blackwell's Island.
